Benny Hill. Surprise at Benny's banishment from TV

His time with Benny Hill ranks among the highlights of Nicholas Parsons' career, writes Craig Campbell.  Memories of the comic legend still make him laugh, but he finds it almost impossible to watch telly repeats of Benny, and that irks him. "Benny was one of the sweetest, loveliest men to work with," Nicholas recalls. "So I've never understood why they've got a bit hot under the collar about his comedy.  "People still enjoy his shows around the world, in America and all sorts of countries, and in fact I just got a repeat fee of £30! But the don't repeat it over here. "He was a very funny guy. His humour was based on old traditions of music hall, of seaside postcards, which were accepted.  If it's about feminism, well, people laughed at them back then -- and if you actually look at Benny 's sketches, it was actually the woman who came out on top!" If he can't get his head round how comedy trends have altered through political correctness, he is still in no doubt as to why his own mind still whirls away at top speeds in his 90s. "You must think of the brain as a muscle," Nicolas points out, "and keep using it to keep it in good health. I like Sudoku, for instance, but really my work keeps my mind active.  "For instance, I like to try new things. Someone asked me to do a TV show through the night, for London Weekend, a TV job for radio money"!  "I did it, from 11pm till two in the morning, and it was amazing, with a quiz show and gags. All the people in it were from the pop world, with a young audience. "All of this gave me a new generation, it pushed me a bit, an the whole thing forced me to use my brain. The more you use it like a muscle, the more youthful you remain. "Funnily enough, Sale of The Century nearly killed me! By the end of it, having gone on so long, i was typecast as a quiz show man, rather than an actor. "I couldn't even get a a Theatre job for a while."

Benny Hill was a 'long time ago' favourite of mine. I didn't realize he was still living.  He died in 1992 John Park

He was born on this day 1924 21-01-2016

Benny Hill (1924--1992) Entertainment was in his blood, he was the son and grandson of circus clowns. His TV sketch show was broadcast on 97 channels worldwide and sparked a prison riot in California when 'lights out' was brought for forward by one hour meaning inmates would miss it. He was one of my all time favourites.
